The Education Dialogue was formally launched in 2000.  Its mission is to foster open dialogue about the state of metals education today as well as the needs and issues for the future.

For the first few years, the session was held on Wednesday, before the SNAG conference opened.  By motion at the 2003 conference, and starting with the 2005 conference, the Education Dialogue session was moved to become part of the conference programming.

Courtney Starrett, Donna Sweigart and Rebecca Strzelec, the three coordinators of both the 2007 and 2008 Education Dialogue sessions, convinced the board of directors that the Education Dialogue should become more of an official program of SNAG and the annual conferences.  Following a meeting in Savannah, together we created and implemented a policy document  in May 2008.  That document guides the Education Dialogue and an Education Dialogue Committee, and articulates the respective responsibilities of SNAG, the board liaison appointed to oversee the Education Dialogue, and the educators coordinating the sessions each year.
