Exhibition in Print

Metalsmith's special annual issue brings exhibitions to
your doorstep. Some years are juried, and other years are
curated, every year a winning issue.
Metalsmith’s 2008 Exhibition
in Print on “Equilibrium”
Guest Curators: Kate Bonansinga and Rachelle Thiewes
This curated Exhibition in Print on “Equilibrium”
will present art that engages the body as site and alters
sensorial experience by impacting one or more of the five
senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell) and, by
extension, the perceptions and actions of the viewer, the
wearer, or both.
Areas to be explored include:
- Prosthetic devices that both empower the wearer by extending
the body’s range of impact, while also inhibiting
one’s sense of touch, because one never actually feels
the grasped objects
- Designs that literally or symbolically protect the body, such
as contemporary armor; make the wearer more autonomous and
self-reliant; or inhibit the wearer’s sight, touch and/or
hearing
- Edible or fragrant jewelry
- Jewelry or objects for the future, when environments are
predicted to be more sterile and less sensorial
- Jewelry or objects that require balance, or throw the body
off balance
Works selected by the curators will appear in Metalsmith’s 2008 Exhibition
in Print (published in August). In addition, chosen
objects will be shown in an exhibition at the Stanlee and
Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts at the University of
Texas at El Paso in Spring 2009.
Deadline for the call for submissions was
November 1, 2007.
