This week’s new YouTube video shows how I make a blank chuck (or form) to be used in metal spinning. I use readily available oak boards that I laminated together. The video shows the drilling, threading, and lathe turning of the chuck into a cylinder to be further shaped based on the particular spinning project:

Ps, tennis balls not just for tennis! I was looking for something soft and spherical to hit these delicate filigrees with, and it ended up being a good solution for forming the frame without hurting the wires inside.

January 2023: makes neon light monogram necklace
February 2023: makes vintage neon signs using neon paint
March 2023: orders powder coat, tries it once and packs it away
November/December 2023: experiments with enamel
February 2024: realizes it’s neon my muse is after
March 2024: learns powder coating to almost immediately realize it’ll never be neon enough
April & May 2024: exclaims “it’s not neon enough” way too many times while experimenting
June 2024: adds vintage tin & acrylic and finds all the answers.

It’s been a long road, but the first neon update is here!
Estimated to be dropping the new work in the shop by Friday.
I’ll be slowly leaning more into my newsletter as IG slowly dies, so if you don’t want to miss this update or future work sign up on my website!

EDIT: I should really add
End of May: gets frustrated and completely gives up on neon for a week. 😆

To me SNAG is a vital part of our field. It has helped me connect with so many people and places and was actually how I learned about my graduate program. Without SNAG, I would not be where I am today. Through SNAG I have traveled to places I probably would not have, and I even sold my first large piece through a SNAG show. I met lifelong friends and makers and I learned how diverse the work in our field really is.”
