Bougainvillea Butterfly

Rebecca Hannon

Pinned butterflies in glass cases have always attracted and repelled me. They are unbelievably beautiful examples from nature, far exceeding almost any jewel. But I don’t believe these creatures died a natural death. To send a pin through such beauty, entrapped for eternity is quite melancholic. My butterfly is an imagined souvenir of Morocco: a silhouette from tracings of Bougainvillea leaves. Her coloring is decidedly unnatural, slanting towards the joy found in youthful pencil coloring.
