Doris Chou-Durfee
My father raised bonsai as he parented: prune the unruly branches, and bind the tender shoots to grow properly. His garden was tidy with Chinese vegetables and as kids we spent hours each week planting and weeding. Once, hauling a bucket, I stumbled upon a bramble, just out of sight, laden with half-ripe berries. I can still recall how it felt gathering something wild, unpossessed and sweetly illicit.
With this brooch, I tried to evoke that feeling of first discovery, warmth and sticky fingers.
