Artist Statement: Inspired by historical Edwardian Habille cameos, this piece reforms classical representations of identity with present-day computer-controlled technologies. Derived from 17th century Japanese metalworking techniques, Mokume Gane provides the contextual foundation and visually reinforces the complexity of accumulated human experiences formulating one’s identity. The gemmed historical profile of a woman is juxtaposed with a fingerprint inference to question what is fabricated and what is true.
