Tyler Young

Self Portrait is an examination of my own struggles to understand my identity. As an Asian American with an undergraduate degree in America, my cultural identity was blurred by the predominantly white intellectuals I was taught throughout school. Utilizing the dot motif in John Baldessari’s artwork, the enameled dot covering my face aims to reconsider the lack of understanding of my individual self rather than being utilized to place emphasis on incidental elements in the background.

Materials: Wood, copper, enamel, and acrylic paints

Dimensions: 1 3/4″ x 3″ x 1/2″
