Artist bio: Metalsmithing is a second career for me. After a 40-year career as a professional musician, I started exploring visual art in metalsmithing. I loved studying stylistic periods in visual arts just as I had earlier studied these periods from the music perspective. Much of my work is organic and botanical in subject, with a special fondness for ginkgos, a traditional symbol of resiliency, with some more recent abstract explorations. I credit my study at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with encouraging my work and providing a foundation for my development of a body of work and the establishment of my jewelry business, Berkshire Creations.
The ginkgos in my submitted pieces are based on leaves found in Wellsville, NY. Conditions there are not ideal for ginkgos, and their distorted shapes reflect this. Nonetheless, the species is resilient enough to thrive in these conditions. Having a rough day? Touch your ginkgo pendant, or earring to remind yourself “I’ve got this!”
