Allison Ice

Having recently completed my Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Kansas, I am currently based in my home town of Lawrence, Kansas. I’m a metalsmith, 3D designer and jeweler constantly searching for new ways to explore craft, adornment, and the movement of metal. My work combines familiar aesthetic and tactile elements of growing up, like the bright and shiny plastic of an action figure, or the shiny metal and silky pearls from an heirloom piece of jewelry. I compose these elements into bizarre objects and unexpected wearables. By interacting with their audience, my crafted commercially-inspired oddities question and satirize the deeply human experience of valuing a nostalgic object regardless of material worth.

Conceptual Statement: “Big Girls Don’t Cry” questions gendered and socialized views of romantic relationships, love and marriage. Is this model of life even something that I want, or simply something that all little girls are expected to dream about? How many of my goals and ideas surrounding relationships and commitment are my own, and how many were forced upon me by resounding western society and culture? How do I know what I truly need, versus what everyone else tells me I want? Will a diamond ring pacify these uncomfortable feelings? Will a big wedding and all the attention that comes with it quiet me down, and keep me from crying?

Conceptual Statement: "Scream Beads. No. 1" is a referendum on my sexual history, packed with reflections on the origins of my sexuality and my gender identity. My first set of "scream beads" unlocked a slew of memories and feelings about portions of my adolescence that my subconscious was dying to talk about. This happened when I decided to use expired lipstick as a color treatment, unwittingly unleashing these gut feelings that were screaming at me to acknowledge and release them. They sparked questions about what kinds of values I claim to hold, and which of those values I hold in practice, particularly as a I grow more and more comfortable with the titles of “feminist” “artist” and “queer.” I began wondering if I live my life aligning with any of those values, or if it is all just a mirage—an identity I have lived only in my own mind. I have been negligent in acknowledging the intensity of certain experiences and how they have shaped me as a person.

Conceptual Statement: "Imaginary Frenemies" is a series of interactive objects that represent my own decades long-struggles with mental health and self-care, and the distinct brand of nostalgia that I harbor for these struggles. The “algia” in “nostalgia” means “pain” and the “nost” in the word means “homecoming.” These forms are inspired by the tactile and visual stimulants of some of my favorite toys as a child, all of which invoke painful memories that feel like home. By creating these objects and offering them up for interaction, I aim to explore and challenge our tangled perceptions of material and sentimental value. Combining functional and visual qualities of a toy with the intimacy and intricacy of body adornment encourages viewers to embrace the pain of nostalgia, rediscover the child within them, and to perhaps discover something about themselves through play and unhindered self-expression.
