Anjali Villarini

My name is Anjali Villarini and I am currently a student at SDSU majoring in printmaking/painting, as well as a student at San Diego Continuing Education working towards my certification in clothing construction. I am the first to go to college in my family and the first to pursue an artistic career. The inspiration for many of my pieces comes from experiences among everyday people. I attempt to convey the beauty and pain in everyday lives through wearable clothing and accessories made out of unique textiles.

Conceptual Statement: For my piece, "The Growth of Decay," I interpreted the neurons of the brain that are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Although the neurons are still functional, there is decay and detachment of the memory within. This piece is dedicated to my father and other family members I have lost to this disease. Despite the decay growing inside of them, there was still the growth of their love and courage till the end. To indicate the feeling of growth the neuron covers the entire chest and forms a connection around the neck to look like synapses, which is what connects neurons to each other. As for the feeling of decay, because Alzheimer's affects the ability to remember things, I added a play on the idea of wishy-washy memory with a soap-like texture. I also included a misshapen hole pattern to demonstrate the plaque that consumes the brain. The use of dark shadows in the photos symbolize the holes left behind from the decay and the body movement resonates neurons branching outwards.
