Bruce Bauer

My three dimensional sense and attention to minute detail have arisen from four decades as a Pediatric Reconstructive Surgeon; skills that a career as a jeweler alone could not provide. My love of nature and Asian inspired art, have influenced the creation of one of a kind wearable sculptural pieces. Thematically, each piece tells a story. One recurring theme being bees and their hives inspired my company name (BSBee Designs) , another being the delicate balance of nature in the Arctic. Many of my works are designed with hidden elements on the reverse, or inside the piece for only the wearer to discover. Many will deconstruct to allow them to be worn in varied ways. All are designed to be seen in all dimensions, as sculptural works and are best described as art jewelry with a sense of whimsy. Not surprisingly, my love and respect for conserving nature, warranted a shift in carving material to non-endangered Warthog tusk, when organic material was called for in a particular design.

Octopus-cuff-revised.jpg

Opulent Octopus Cuff

Date of Creation: April 10, 2023

List of Materials: Sterling silver, boulder opal, black star sapphires

Dimensions: 60 X 80 X 63 mm

Photographer's Name: Bruce Bauer

Conceptual Statement: This cuff along with a series of my other ocean creature jewelry designs, shows different elements from all sides, as the octopus surrounds the wearer's wrist, while still displaying a lightness. Conceptually, however viewed, there are things to capture the eye, and for the star sapphire eyes to shift to the viewer. Furthering the image of the octopus moving through its undersea environment, the sides of the cuff display kelp, coral, and a starfish. The three dimensionality of the image of the octopus is created through both Ishidashi metal sculpting, and fabrication. The blues, greens and sparkles of the boulder opal call to mind the shimmer of undersea life beneath the bright light above.

Breaching Orca

Date of Creation: 20/11/2021

List of Materials: Platinum Oco Agate (dyed), carved Whitby Jet, Non-endangered Warthog tusk inlay, golden pearl shell, with Sterling Silver bale.

Dimensions: 60 X 40 x 2.3 mm

Photographer's Name: Bruce Bauer

Conceptual Statement: This is one of a series of Breaching Whale Carved fabricated pendants in which I used the sparkling platinum crystals on the partially blue dyed Platinum Oco Agate to suggest the bubbling surface of the ocean through which in this case an Orca arises. The Orca carved from Whitby Jet, and its white markings carved and inlaid from non-endangered warthog tusk. The image initially used for the concept was an Orca breaching at sunset, so the glowing background was created using a segment of a Golden Pearl Shell. Not visible in these images is a sterling silver bale shaped as a whale's tail on the reverse.

Peace After the Pandemic

Date of Creation: 18/04/2020

List of Materials: Carved warthog tusk dove, with Tsavorite garnet olive branch leaves, carved Chrysoprase and sterling silver

Dimensions: 28 X 62 X 12 mm

Photographer's Name: Bruce Bauer

Conceptual Statement: "Peace After the Pandemic" arose as an idea at the arrival of Spring 2020 when as a surgeon thinking about our masking and dealing with the pandemic, I thought of a dove arising with its olive branch as a classic symbol of peace, yet my vision had the branch with its green Tsavorite leaves, arising from the ties of an N95 mask, that i then carved from Chrysoprase. The lift off of the dove was to leave the masking and pandemic behind us. The carving and fabrication was perhaps the most pandemic oriented creation of my time out of the operating room. It is mounted for wear as both a brooch and a pendant.
