Jingfei Sophia Deng

Growing up in a family of jewelry lovers in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, Sophia Deng was inspired at a very young age. Her mother was not only a jewelry consumer, but also a collector, fascinated with various kinds of gemstones and jades. Therefore, Sophia built relationships with wholesalers, stone sellers, studios, and designers. These inspiring experiences formed a very deep interest in Sophia, and she soon started to design and manufacture jewelry for her mother, relatives, and family friends.

During Sophia’s college career in Pratt Institute Brooklyn, she explored the concept of art jewelry and learned that jewelry is not only occupied by high jewelry and commercial accessories, which led Sophia into the path of adventure in creating art. She began to illustrate jewelry in a different perspective and non traditional way. With interest in sculptural forms, Sophia’s senior thesis collections present multilayered crocheting elements with monochromatic aesthetic jewelry.
