Paisley Rose Amrein

Paisley Rose (she/her) is a multi-disciplinary artist. Though painting is her primary focus, she also works in metal, leather, sewing, tattooing, and more. She works to confront systemic racism, by exploring issues within contemporary society and how they relate to the near and distant past. As a Black woman, her art is a way to gain pride for her identity, and is meant to make others in the Black community share that pride. Growing up in Denver, Colorado, an area that has a small population of Black people, Paisley wasn’t raised around a lot of people that looked like her. She also wasn’t exposed to art or media that resembled her. For that reason, when she was a kid all the way through to her second year in college she was creating art that did not look like her. She never felt proud of her identity, and would work hard to hide it-she would straighten her hair and didn’t care for the color of her skin. Making art about Black identity was a way to move past that self hate.
