Born in Santa Cruz California, home of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Darci Shea grew up watching the playful otters that lived in the kelp forests. The California Sea Otter is a Keystone Species of the Monterey Bay and is vital for the health and wellbeing of the kelp forest ecosystem. Their diet consists of seafood and sea urchin, which plagues the sea floor in vast numbers mowing down the kelp forest.
In this piece I wanted to showcase the important connection of the California Sea otter with their habitat. The image of the otter is seen just popping up out of the water holding a red urchin. The background is a faded blue to white mimicking the fog of the bay and the back of the piece shows the kelp forest underwater.
