I use my work to express the environment I was raised in. Growing up as a Mexican-American, I have a different perspective from most of my colleagues, not only within the metals and jewelry field but in the craft field as a whole. My work displays a cultural portrait in which I present the imagery and feelings of growing up as a first generation Mexican-American. I confront issues that I personally witnessed growing up – such as undocumented immigrants, drug culture, and Catholic culture within the Mexican community. Recently, it has become a trend for people to learn more about their genealogy. I’ve heard many stories from those of European-descent about how older generations made their move to the United States from their origin countries. These stories are passed down from generation to generation and can be tracked down through genealogy records. The stories of Mexican immigrants are not as straightforward and, in many cases, may not be recorded at all.
