You can put on a pretty face, and act like everything is fine. But the crushing weight of the world still holds up in the back of your mind. Tucked into the shadows, aching loneliness and sorrow; the feelings no one wants to feel. Take time to heal. You deserve to feel comfortable in your own skin.
Purple Hyacinths are the flowers of sorrow, sent as a gift to apologize for wrong-doings. The soft form of this flower embodies the comfortable and relaxed façade we use to hide our negative feelings. But the negativity cannot be easily hidden and pours out into the flower’s shadow, a projection of its true emotions through body language.
This necklace is part of Living in the Shadows, a series depicting the struggle of negative emotions. Many people prefer to put on a brave face, and pretend everything is okay while they are around others. But no matter how hard they try to hide it, those unpleasant feelings are always part of them.

Using the Victorian language of flowers, I capture the effects of mental health on the body. The contrast of soft and rigid materials become a struggle between being comfortable and distressed. It asks you to take the time to process the sadness, anger, and fear that you struggle with alone, because you deserve to feel comfortable in your own skin.
