I’ve always been fascinated by the the processes used in the ancient Japanese metal arts. In my most recent work with mokumé gané I start by fusing, forging and patterning a billet of mixed metals using somewhat traditional methods. I then work to create a piece that explores the juxtaposition between modern form and ancient techniques.

My work begins with inspiration often coming from forms and textures I find in nature, a falling leaf, woodgrain, the curve of a nautilus shell, or unique inclusions in a stone. Muse in mind, I immerse myself in design and hand fabrication of my metal to capture the elegance of nature and achieve a sense of movement, balance and dimensionality.
